Box Score The Hamline football team threw some early haymakers at undefeated St. Thomas. The Pipers got within two points midway in the second quarter before the nationally ranked Tommies pulled away for a 71-20 decision at O'Shaughnessy Field.
Naji El-Araby scored on a pair of short runs and
Justice Spriggs hooked up with
Nick Kampa for a touchdown and a two-point conversion for the Pipers, who are now 4-3 overall, 2-3 in the MIAC.
After UST scored on its first drive, the Pipers responded with a 45-yard drive that ended with El-Araby going in from three yards out. The Tommies led 22-6 int he second quarter when the Pipers marched 83 yards with El-Araby finishing things off with a four yards. It is the second straight season the Blaine, Minn. native scored on UST on their home field. Spriggs found Kampa in the corner of the end zone for a two point conversion and it was 22-14. The Pipers held and then went 80 yards in seven plays with Spriggs, who threw for 159 yards on the day, finding Kampa for an 18 yard score. The two point conversion failed.
UST took charge from there.
Josiah Harris was the top receiver for the Pipers with five catches for 38 yards. Kampa caught four for 67.
Jordan Deno had six unassisted tackles.
Drake Singleton and
Jonny Nguyen had five solos and two assists and
Zach Schwalbach had four solos and four assists to lead the defensive numbers.
The Pipers return to Klas Field to face Augsburg (2-6, 2-4 MIAC) on Saturday, October 29. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
