Hall Lifts M Hockey To OT Tie

11/11/2016 10:16:00 PM

Box Score The Hamline men's hockey defensive corps turned offensive just in time Friday night. Mitch Hall's goal through traffic with 46 seconds remaining lifted the Pipers to a 2-2 overtime tie against Wis-River Falls at Hunt Arena. Hall's blue line partner, Jesse Kessler, had the other goal as HU improved to 3-0-2 overall and remain one of just two MIAC teams without a loss this year.

It was a tight game from the start. The Falcons broke a scoreless tie six minutes into the second period only to see Kessler knot the game on a power play goal seven minutes later.

WRF grabbed the lead with 6:53 left and held the Pipers at bay until Hall, with goalie Justin Quale gone for a sixth attacker, whistled a shot through traffic for his second goal of the season. Mitch McPherson drew an assist on the play. HU carried the play in the five-minute extra session with a 5-2 edge in shots on goal but the Falcons held on for the deadlock.

Quale was active all night, kicking out 32 shots in all. The five-game unbeaten string is the best HU start to a men's hockey season in at least 40 years. (Records aren't available before 1976.)

The Pipers get little time to rest. They head to the north shore Saturday, November 12 to face Wis-Superior. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
