Box Score Chloe Graves had every reason to be tired Saturday afternoon at Northwestern. After all, she had played 30 minutes the night before in the Pipers' season-opening win at North Central.
But the inexhaustible senior showed why she led the MIAC in Minutes Played (and productive ones at that) in Hamline's 66-56 win Saturday that gave the Piper women hoopsters a 2-0 start for the first time since the 2008-09 season.
Graves, who has now scored 900 points in her Hamline career, unleashed a game high 35 minutes and poured in 20 points -- including five three-pointers -- adding five rebounds, three assists and a steal as HU took command of matters in the second quarter and never looked back. In addition to Graves' work,
Kaeli Stayer and
Alaina Quaranta scored 10 points apiece and
Reilly Geistfeld grabbed a game high nine rebounds.
Things didn't start well. The Pipers trailed 19-15 after a quarter and were still behind 24-20 with 6:29 remaining in the second quarter. A Graves' three-pointer ignited 18-0 run over a six-minute span. Stayer had a big piece of that action with eight points and Hamline went into the locker room with a 38-26 advantage.
The Eagles made efforts to make things tight but some strong defense when things mattered the most kept them from getting closer than six points the rest of the way. The Pipers held UNW to just 33.3 per cent shooting from the field and a 46-35 edge in rebounds.
After two road wins in 20 hours, the Pipers now get to show the home folks what they can do. Hamline opens the Hutton Arena portion of the schedule on Tuesday, November 22 against Wis-Stout. Game time is 6:00 p.m.
