Box Score Nick Kampa is making the most of his first healthy season of football. The senior wide receiver caught his eighth touchdown pass of the year from QB
Justice Spriggs in the Pipers' 42-6 loss at St. John's Saturday. The St. Anthony, Minn. native now has 46 catches for a team leading 697 yards. His score came in the first quarter and cut a SJU lead to 7-6. The Johnnies led just 14-6 well into the third quarter before pulling away late.
Spriggs continued to etch his name in the HU record book. The sophomore completed 19 of 30 passes for 119 yards. His TD toss to Kampa was his 23rd of the season. He now has 205 completions on the season, breaking the mark of 193 set by Tim Bona in 2014. He also has 2,302 total yards for the season, breaking the mark of 2,284 set by Jay Schneider in 1994.
The Piper defense hung tough for a long time against a Johhnie team that is now 8-1 on the season. Hamline recovered three fumbles and twice stopped SJU on fourth down.
It was a fumble recovery by
Jonny Nguyen at the SJU 17 that led to the Hamline score. On the fourth play after Nguyen's recovery, Spriggs and Kampa connected on a 1-yard play. The extra point try, however, was blocked.
SJU was up 14-6 and driving again at the end of the half when
Jesse Green and
Dalton Pakkala hauled down a SJU receiver at the HU 2 on the last play of the half. It stayed 14-6 until the Johnnies scored a pair of touchdowns less than two minutes apart in the third quarter.
Spriggs, who leads the MIAC in six categories, spread the ball to seven different receivers with
Josiah Harris and
Naji El-Araby leading the way with five receptions apiece. Nguyen and
Zach Schwalbach were the top tacklers on defense with 13 stops each.
Mitchell Maday, the MIAC leader in sacks had 1.5 on the day. His total of 10.5 is just 1.5 off the school record of 12, set by Cory Molenaar in 1998.
Hamline is 5-4 overall and 3-4 in the MIAC. They wrap up the season against Bethel (4-5, 4-3 MIAC) on Saturday, November 12 at Klas Field. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
