MBB Hangs Tough Against Tommies

Box Score Hamline's men's basketball team shot 49 per cent from the field and held their own on the boards but fell to league leading St. Thomas, 82-65, at Hutton Arena Saturday afternoon. Perhaps inspired by the return of former HU hoopster James "Pinky" Boyd (the school's oldest living member of the athletic Hall of Fame), the Pipers held the Tommies to just 1-for-8 from three point range and 33 first half points, trailing by seven at the intermission.

During the break, Boyd was honored as part of a military appreciation day ceremoney. In his addition to his Hamline athletic exploits, Boys served three years in the military and was awarded the Purple Heart.

UST, however, showed why they are 19-1 on the season with a 17-7 run in the first four minutes of the second half. The Pipers refused to give in, chopping the margin to nine on two occasions before giving way. They also forced the Tommies into two shot clock violations.

Zach Smith gave the largest crowd of the season at Hutton something to make noise about as he led the Pipers offense with 14 points and added four assists. Connor Knutson had a big second half to finish with 10 points and led the Pipers with five rebounds.

Hamline is on a rugged segment of their schedule that sees them playing five games in 10 days. The Pipers, who are now 4-16 overall (2-13 MIAC) head to Carleton Monday, February 8 for a 7:00 p.m. tip off. Concordia visits Hutton Arena on Wednesday, February 10 for a 5:45 p.m. game.
