Volleyball Grinds Past Carleton In MIAC Opener

9/14/2016 9:17:00 PM

Box Score It's probably a good thing that the Hamline volleyball team had only one match scheduled this week. It may take them a while to recover from the conference opener against Carleton Wednesday night at Hutton Arena.

They will be doing it with a smile on their face, though, after working their way past the Knights by a 3-1 margin.

The final score didn't reflect how tight and tense this match was. There were 37 tie scores and 16 lead changes. The Pipers had four players in double figures in kills and five in digs. Jena Meyer led the balanced attack with 14 kills with Cass Bittle and Julia Zolnosky close behind with a dozen each. Beth Goodman added 11. Morgen Coleman (8) had a double-double with a career high 45 assists and 10 digs. The freshman is third in the MIAC in Assists per Set (8.78) and fourth in over all assists with 281. Amelia Jensen led the dig brigade with 26. She also had three service aces (as did Megan Anderson).

The first set was tied at 18 when Mayer recorded a pair of kills to put HU ahead for good at 20-19. The Knights closed to within one but that was it. In the second set, the Pipers held a 22-21 lead only to see the Knights rattle four of the next five points. In the next go-around, Jensen served six straight winners (including the three service aces) to seemingly put the Pipers in control at 14-8. But the Knights showed how they got to 8-1 in non-conference games by rallying to tie matters at 24. Goodman came up with the last two kills to give HU a two sets to one edge. HU led by as many five points in the next set only to see the Knights surge within one at 21-20. The Pipers then scored the last four points to clinch the league lidlifter and improve the overall won-loss mark to 6-3. Fittingly, Meyer had the last kill.

Hamline is off until Wednesday, September 21 when they play at St. Mary's.
