M Hockey Puts Up Stiff Fight in Loss to Stevens Point

1/7/2017 10:15:00 PM

Box Score Jaycob McCombs had a goal and an assist and the Hamline men's hockey gave defending NCAA D-III Wis-Stevens Point a rough time of it before dropping a 6-3 decision Saturday night at Oscar Johnson Arena. Jesse Kessler and Tyler Gonzales (pictured) also scored for HU, which outshot the Pointers, 33-29 but fell to 6-6-2 overall on the season.

The Pointers (11-2-2) are rated No. 3 in both D-III polls. After scoring an early goal, they took advantage of a major penalty to Hamline's Mitch McPherson to net a power play marker and hold a 2-0 lead. McCombs got one back in the final minute of the period and it was 2-1 at the first break. WSP scored twice in less than two minutes in the second period to make it 4-1 but Kessler used a major on WSP's Nathan Harris to his own advantage for a power goal and it was 4-2 after two,

WSP connected first in the third period only to have Gonzales work his way to the net to keep hope alive at 5-3. The Pointers, however, held firm, adding one more goal for the win. Justin Quale had 23 saves for HU. Blueliner Garrett Schmitz was the top gunner for Hamline with six shots on goal.

Hamline, which has a 3-3-0 MIAC record, returns to conference action next weekend with a pair of games in Moorhead against Concordia. Friday's game is at 7:00 p.m. with a Saturday rematch at 2:00 p.m.
