Box Score It has taken
Justice Spriggs less than three years to wipe out a record that stood for more than two decades. The junior quarterback passed for 343 yards and a touchdown to surpass Jay Schneider as the school's all-time leader in passing yardage. Spriggs has thrown for 5,506 yards, surpassing Schneider, who played here from 1991-94. Unfortunately, Spriggs and the Pipers couldn't celebrate a win with the record, losing the annual battle for The Hammer, 35-28, at Augsbuirg Saturday afternoon.
After being shutout two weeks in a row, the Piper offense returned to form with 494 yards total offense. Spriggs completed 27 of 39 passes for 343 yards. 11 of those passes were snared by
Josiah Harris for 209 yards and a score. The Piper running game was in gear as well as
Brenden Nachtrieb rambled for 118 yards and a score as part of a 151 yard effort. Spriggs himself joined in the fun with a pair of TD runs.
The Pipers were in trouble early, trailing 13-0 after a quarter. Spriggs' 1-yard run capped a 67-yard, eight play drive that made it 13-7 but Augsburg responded in kind for a 20-7 half time edge. Nachtrieb, who also had a strong game as a freshman when the teams last played at Augsburg, bolted in from three yards out to make it 20-14. Augsburg scored again for a 28-14 lead after three quarters.
HU really went to work then. The Pipers marched 69 yards for a score to make it 28-20 but the extra point was blocked. Undaunted, they forced a fumble that was recovered by
Noah Jacobson at the Auggie 40. Spriggs and Harris hooked up twice -- the latter for a 35 yard score. The pair combined for a two-point play that tied the game. Augsburg marched back up field and untied matters at 35-28 with 5:58 left in the game. HU moved to the Auggie 5 only to see Spriggs' last pass of the day get picked off in the end zone.
Despite the high score, HU had some sterling defensive efforts. Jacobson had a game high dozen tackles, six of which were solos.
Mitchell Maday had three sacks.
Dalton Pakkala and
George Haynes III recorded interceptions
