10/28/2017 5:50:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 For the seniors, they could truly say they went out swinging. For the underclassmen, it was a building block for 2018. For the families of the Hamline volleyball team, it was a terrific parting gift and a great way to end the season.

Hamline finished 2017 on an up note, sweeping past Macalester, 3-0, and then rallying past Wis-Superior for a 3-1 decision Saturday at Hutton Arena. The Pipers finish the year 6-24 overall under acting head coach Maggie Meixl with wins in three of their final four matches.

They ended up 2-9 in the MIAC with a .286 hitting percentage in the sweep of the Scots. Cass Bittle led the attackers with 11 kills. Megan Rubbelke gave a preview of upcoming events with 31 assists with Megan Anderson adding 14 digs and Marisa Franco contributing 10. HU was particularly strong on its own serve, recording a 74% sideout percentage in the 25-15, 25-22, 25-12 wins.

After a brief rest, they faced the Yellowjackets, who entered the match with a 18-11 overall record. In the first set, the Pipers bolted to a 9-3 lead only to see UWS roar back to take a 12-11 advantage. It went back and forth from there until HU pulled away late for a 25-22 win. UWS turned the tables with a 25-21 second set win. Hamline went back up a set with a 25-17 decision. It looked for all the world like the final match of the year would be extended when UWS held a 14-8 lead in the fourth set. Things looked grimmer when the margin was 21-13. The Pipers, however, got a second (and third) wind and roared back with a 10-2 run to make it 23-21. UWS got the next point for a 24-21 advantage. HU responded with the last five points, the last of which was a Reilly Geistfeld kill that sealed a 26-24 win and a memorable end to the season.

Bittle amd Geistfeld (who hit .406 for the match)  finished with 17 kills apiece. Rubbelke had 51 assists, giving her 82 for the day and a team leading 399 for the season. Morgen Coleman led the back wall brigade with 27 digs with Franco coming up with 19 and Anderson 18. The sophomore had five service aces in the two matches and is currently leading the MIAC with 39.

It was the final match for seniors Hayley Schroer, Bittle, Franco, Danica Hanson and Doerr.
