Box Score Josiah Harris made his last football game for Hamline one to remember. Meanwhile,
Justice Spriggs and
Luke Trudell put up numbers to start a building block for 2018.
Harris caught eight passes for 140 yards and scored both touchdowns for Hamline in a season-ending 54-14 loss at Bethel Saturday. The River Falls, Wis. native finished the season with 57 catches for 803 yards. The reception number is the highest since Kevin Graslewicz set the school record with 71 grabs in 1984. The yardage is the most by a HU wide out since Tim Queck went for 919 in 2009. Harris was also the team's leading rusher for the game with four carries for 43 yards. (For the season, Josiah averaged 10 yards a carry.)
Harris' 80.3 yards per game average is third best in the MIAC as is his six TD receptions.
Spriggs added to his school career record for passing yardage by completing 20 of 31 passes for 246 yards and the two scores. In three seasons, the junior QB has thrown for 5,752 yards. He finished 2017 third in the MIAC with a 216.9 yards per game average and 19 TD passes.
Trudell, a junior linebacker, had a dozen tackles, including seven solos, to finish the season with a team leading 90. His 44 solo stops ranks second among MIAC defenders. CBs
Jordan Deno and
Dalton Pakkala, who are also juniors, also had strong days with nine tackles each against the Royals.
The teams battled on even terms early. The first quarter was scoreless. BU jumped to a 14-0 lead in the second quarter but Spriggs and Harris sliced that in half by teaming up for a 28 yard score midway in the period. The Royals struck shortly before halftime to grab a 20-7 edge at intermission.
BU scored on their first possession of the second half only to see Spriggs and Harris answer with a 13-yard connection to make it 26-14. That was as close as the Pipers could get as the Royals pulled away to finish the season with a 5-5 overall mark.
Hamline ended the season with a 2-8 overall, 1-7 in the MIAC.
It was the final game for Harris and 15 other seniors.
