Smith Hits 1,000 Points as Mens BB Clinch Fifth Place

Welcome back to the MIAC playoffs to the Hamline men's basketball team.

Smith, the junior guard from Burnsville, Minn., became the 16th player to reach the grand mark when he connected on a pair of free throws with 40 seconds remaining in Hamline's 90-74 win over Macalester Saturday at Hutton Arena. The win clinched fifth place for Hamline with a 11-9 MIAC mark. Picked for 11th in the coaches' preseason poll, the Pipers will be heading to Collegeville on Tuesday, February 21 to face St. John's, a team they dropped a pair of two-point decisions to during the regular season.

Hamline, now 14-11 overall, jumped on their Snelling Ave. neighbors early, grabbing an eight point lead at 20-12 nine minutes into the game. HU pushed it to 16 before the Scots surged late to cut it to 43-34 at halftime.

 Mac cut the lead to six at 49-43 in the first three minutes of th second half. The Pipers came back with 11 unanswered points as TC Robinson, who led all scorers with 18 points, threw down a three-pointer and Isaac Brooks added a pair of baskets. Jay Betts chipped in witha pair and HU took off from there. Betts and Smith backed up Robinson with 16 points each and Kalu Abosi added 14. and a team high eight rebounds. In addition to his offense, Robinson had five assists and five steals. 

Hamline brought their shooting eye to Hutton Saturday, connecting on 60.7 per cent from the field (34-56). 

So the Pipers now turn their sights on the Johnnies. They dropped an overtime game to them last month and a 65-63 decision in Collegeville on Wednesday. The 14 wins is the most by a HU team since the 2010-11 team went 16-11. Game time in Collegeville Tuesday ia 7:00 p.m.
