VB Rallies Past Carroll To Even Mark at 2-2

9/2/2017 8:09:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 It had been a long, tiring day. The Hamline volleyball team lost their early match to Martin Luther, 3-0 and trailed Carroll (Wis.) by a 2-1 margin, losing both sets by tight 29-27 margins. When Carroll jumped to a quick 6-3 lead in the fourth set, things looked a bit grim. But the Pipers found a second wind, went on 11-3 run to gain and kept on going for a 25-14 fourth set win. HU then broke away late for a 15-11 win in the deciding set to earn a split of the day's action at Carleton College Saturday.

Hamline is now a hard-earned 2-2 after the tight win over the Pioneers. Fittingly, Cass Bittle had the last kill to secure the triumph. The senior was a tiger all weekend, recording 10 kills overall to finish the weekend with 49, tops among all MIAC hitters in the early going, Morgen Coleman had 11 kills and Stephanie Maresh contributed 10 for Hamline in the tight win over Carroll.

Coleman also had 11 digs against the Pioneers, a commendable number but one that ranked fourth in this match, behind Marisa Franco (22), Cassie Doerr (21) and Megan Anderson (19). The sophomore added a season high 21 assists for the first triple double of the season. Megan Rubbelke finished a solid first weekend as a collegian with 15 assists and leads the Pipers with 68 overall.

Bittle had 13 kills and Rubbelke 17 assists in the setback to MLC. Doerr led the back wall with 16 digs. The final score was deceptive. HU dropped the first and third sets by 26-24 counts.

The Pipers are off until September 6 when they welcome Crown and Wis-River Falls to Hutton Arena. The first match is at 4:00 p.m. and the second will be at 8:00 p.m.
