Jenna Sampson (26) found herself in the right place at exactly the right time. The sophomore scored her second career goal with 5:27 to play to lift the Hamline women's soccer team to a 1-0 win at St. Thomas Wednesday afternoon. It was the first HU win over their neighbors in four years and also marked the first triumph in recent memory over a nationally ranked team.
The Tommies had recently made their debut in a national poll with a 21st place ranking in the United Soccer Coaches poll. They showed why early as they pressed HU goalie
Kat Armstrong. The freshman, however, stopped all three shots sent her way and the teams went off scoreless at halftime. Both teams treaded cautiously in the second half. The goal came about as both teams attempted to get possession roughly 20 yards in front of then goal. The ball squirted to Sampson and the sophomore drilled a lot shot through traffic that found the back of the net. Armstrong made one more save -- her fifth of the game -- and HU came away with the win to improve to 4-2-1 overall and 2-1 in the MIAC. It was Armstrong's first college shutout. The freshman's 36 saves ranks second among MIAC goalies.
