Box Score The Hamline women's basketball team pressed their luck Saturday against St. Mary's at Hutton Arena. The press worked well as the Pipers reduced a 21-point disadvantage to single digits. But they ran out of time and ended up with an 80-68 setback to the Cardinals.
Reilly Geistfeld scored 20 points and
Kaeli Stayer added 16 for HU, which dropped to 4-13 overall and 3-7 in the MIAC.
Things started fine. A Geistfeld jumper with six seconds remaining lifted the Pipers into an 11-all tie at the first quarter. The Cardinals took charge in the second quarter with a 22-6 margin for a 33-17 lead at halftime. They pushed it to 62-43 after three. The Pipers then put on more pressure and started gaining points. Alaina Quaranta, who finished with 11 points, hit a three-pointer to chop the lead to 12 at 65-53 with 6:29 still to play. Later, Stayer drilled a long shot and the margin was only eight at 76-68 with 1:10 left in the game. That was close as HU could get.
Morgen Coleman led Hamline's 30 rebound effort with five. Coleman,
Heather Moore and Geistfeld were tops in assists with four each. Quaranta was the top thief with a game high six steals.
Hamline heads on the road next week to play at St. Benedict on Wednesday, January 24 (7:00 p.m.) and league leader St. Thomas on Saturday, January 27 (3:00 p.m.).
