Men's Hockey Can't Hold Off Auggies

1/5/2018 10:20:00 PM

Box Score When they were 6-on-5 ... or 5-on-6, the Hamline men's  hockey team did well Friday night at Augsburg. Unfortunately, the Auggies did better at even strength and dealt the Pipers a 6-3 setback at Augsburg Arena.

Jaycob McCombs and Brady Crabtree had power play goals for the Pipers (3-8-1 overall, a 1-4-1 MIAC) and Russ Jordan added a shorthander to account for the offensive numbers. Evan Robert was a busy guy in his first game in goal, making 47 saves.

Robert knocked away 15 in the first period, which ended with Augsburg up 1-0. The middle frame was a wide open affair with McCombs and Crabtree netting tallies nine minutes apart. Unfortunately, the Auggies scored three times (Robert had 18 saves in that frame) and added two more in the third before Jordan, who had six of the Pipers' 33 shots on goal, responded with his shorthander. The HU penalty killers did a good job, shutting down all five Auggie power plays.

The Pipers will play their first game in their new home, TRIA Rink, Saturday against the Auggies. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
