Jordon Deno intercepted a pair of passes, returning one for a touchdown and also had nine tackles for Hamline in a 42-14 football loss to Gustavus Adolphus at Klas Field Saturday. The senior defensive back (2) also had nine tackles, a sack and two tackles for loss.
Justice Spriggs passed the 7,000 yard mark for his career and ran for a score for Hamline on Homecoming.
The score didn't quite tell the story. The HU defense had a pair of excellent stands deep in their own end in the early going, stopping the Gusties twice on fourth down and short. (In fact, GAC went 0-for-3 for the day on fourth down). But a blocked punt that was recovered in the end zone and a punt return for a score knocked the Pipers into a 21-0 first half hole that proved to be too deep.
Spriggs got HU back in the game when he capped a 76 yard, nine play drive with a 12 yard jaunt for a score. The Gusties, however, scored late in the half and tacked on two more in the third quarter. Deno then brought the crowd to life when he snared a pass and ran 41 yards untouched. It was the second HU defensive touchdown of the season and the first time the Pipers had recorded a pick six in a decade.
Luke Trudell kept his MIAC lead in three defensive categories with a dozen tackles, five of which were solos. The senior is on pace for 120 tackles, which would be the most by any Hamline player since Pat Page had 127 in 2012.
Zander Payne was the top Piper rusher with 59 yards on 13 carries.
Triston Thomas was the leading pass catcher with four grabs.
Hamline has a bye next week. They return to action against Bethel at Klas Field on Saturday, October 27. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
