For most of Saturday afternoon, Hamline's football team went stride for stride with Carleton. A tough third quarter was too much to overcome and the Pipers fell, 42-26, at Laird Stadium in Northfield Saturday.
Justice Spriggs threw for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth for HU as part of a 302 yard offensive day. The senior quarterback threw for 144 yards, ran for 30 and passed the 7,000 mark for career yardage.
Triston Thomas continued his excellent freshman with a team high seven catches for 66 yards and a score. On defense,
Luke Trudell had another big day with a dozen tackles, five of which were solos. The senior continues to lead the league in tackles (72), solo stops (45) and tackles per game (12.0). Also notable on the defensive ledger:
Noah Jacobson had nine tackles and recovered a fumble,
Dalton Pakkala had an interception return of 10 yards and there were a combined seven tackles for loss.
Hamline jumped to a 20-7 second quarter lead. Spriggs ran in the first score. In the second quarter, he hooked up with
Tanner Lunceford and
Zander Payne for scores to build a 20-7 advantage. The Knights, however, also scored a pair of TDs and took a 21-20 edge into halftime. In the third quarter, Carleton scored three unanswered touchdowns and it was too much of a hill to climb. Spriggs and Thomas teamed up for the final score of the afternoon.
Brandon Miller was the top Piper rusher with 39 yards on eight carries.
Hamline is now 0-6 overall, 0-4 in MIAC play. They return to Klas Field on Saturday, October 13 to face Gustavus Adolphus in the annual Homecoming game. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m.
