In a short season, all points are important. But some are savored more than others. Saturday may have been one of those days as the Piper men's soccer team rallied for a 1-1 double overtime tie with Augsburg at Paterson Field.
Ben Sorenson converted a
Jack Reddan pass and headed a shot home with 13:30 left in the second half to give HU the big point and improve their MIAC mark to 2-2-1 (5-3-1 overall). The Pipers are currently tied with Carleton for sixth place with seven points. But they are just three points -- or one win -- behind Macalester, Augsburg and St. Thomas, the current occupants of third place.
This was a fast paced, evenly played game. The Auggies scored three minutes into the game when the ball squirted out of a pile and led to a breakaway goal. HU kept pressing and was finally rewarded with the Sorenson goal. Shortly after that,
Ryan Pyle rang a shot off the crossbar. The rebound went to
Logan Weller who was stopped at very close range. Led by Sorenson's four, HU ended up with a 15-13 edge in total shots. (Weller had three.)
Dean Isaacson recorded five saves in goal.
The Pipers are back at Paterson Field Wednesday, October 10 against Bethel. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
