Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Heroes Aplenty For Men's BB In OT Win over Falcons

The Hamline men's basketball team doesn't play a game for 18 days.

Good thing, too. It may take that long to recover from Saturday's heart thumping 88-84 victory over Wis-River Falls at Hutton Arena. It was a game that saw four Pipers score in double figures but perhaps the biggest play of the day was made by Lucas Berg, who swiped an inbound with eight seconds remaining and then sank a free throw to put the game out of reach.

It was a game that also saw 11 lead changes, five ties and five different Pipers (including one non-starter) play 33 minutes or more.

Connor Knutson was the top scorer with 21 points but he got plenty of offensive help from Ethan Scheuring (18 points, eight rebounds), Jake Larson (16 points) and Isaac Brooks (15 points, 10 rebounds).

HU trailed 21-19 midway in the first half but exploded for 12 points in a row, eventually going to the locker room with a 38-29 advantage.

In the second half, HU maintained their lead until until UWRF tied the game at 57 with 7:24 left. HU crept ahead several times but the Falcons kept clawing back, eventually tying the game at 69 and forcing overtime. Knutson's three-point play and Larson's three pointer helped HU grab a 77-71 after two minutes of play. Four made free throws helped balloon the margin to a seemingly safe 83-73 advantage with 1:54 remaining. It was 87-78 with 1:10 left when the Falcons rattled off seven straight points in 56 seconds to make things very tense. A turnover gave UWRF the ball with eight seconds left. On the ensuing throw in pass, Berg stepped in front of the intended target and grabbed the ball, forcing a foul.

The junior made one shot and that was enough to seal the deal, moving the Pipers to 6-4 overall on the season.

Hamline is off until January 2, 2019 when they start a three-game conference road journey, beginning at St. Mary's. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
