Three players reached double figures for the Hamline men's basketball team, who put up a ferocious fight before dropping a 68-65 game at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall Wednesday night.
Isaac Brooks carved up the Auggies for 18 points while
Ethan Scheuring added a double-double with 16 points and a game high 12 rebounds.
Jake Larson (2) also continued to shine, adding 16 points, three assists and a steal.
Hamline fell into an early 18-6 hole but clawed back to get within five at 31-26 by halftime.
The Pipers started slow in the second session, trailing 43-32 with 14:39 to play. HU responded with a 6-0 run to chop the lead to five. Later, Larson scored five unanswered points to knot the game at 46 with 11:14 to go. Augsburg went back ahead, 62-54 only to see the Pipers erupt for nine in a row. Brooks' three-pointer with 2:01 left capped the outburst and gave Hamline a 63-62 lead. But the Auggies scored the game's next four points and held on for the win.
HU held a 38-30 advantage on the boards. In addition to Scheuring,
Connor Knutson snagged seven and Larson picked up six.
HU was bidding to start 3-0 in MIAC play for the first time since the 1990-91 season. Instead, they will take their 4-3 overall mark to Collegeville Saturday to face St. John's. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
