M Hockey Drops Free Wheeling Season Finale

2/17/2018 9:17:00 PM

Box Score The final game of the men's hockey season was an offensive showcase.

Tommy Hall and Brandon Reinholz had a goal and an assist each for Hamline, which gave league champion St. Thomas all they wanted before giving way for a 6-5 setback at TRIA Rink Saturday night. HU finishes the season 9-14-2 overall, 4-10-2 in the MIAC.

The Pipers broke out of the gate fast, grabbing a 3-0 lead in the first 9:15 of play. Kyle Wendorf broke the ice at 3:26. Reinholz and Drake Hunter scored a minute apart to give HU a 3-0 lead. Lance Knudson, making just his second start of the season in goal, stymied the Tommies early with five first period saves.

UST exploded for four goals in the second period but Russ Jordan evened matters with a power play rocket at 17:34 to send the game to the third period tied at 4. The Tommies scored a pair of goals for a 6-4 edge but Hall got one back with a perfect tip of an Austin Wisely shot at 11:24. HU pressed until the end but could not get the equalizer. The Pipers lost all three games to UST this season by a single goal.

It was the final game for 10 seniors who played a major role in reshaping the Piper program. During their time here under head coach Cory Laylin, they won a MISC postseason title, went to the NCAA tournament, made three trips to the MIAC tournament and earned wins in places like Stevens Point.
