Officially, the Hamline men's hockey team battled St. Olaf to a 2-2 tie in Northfield Saturday night.
But, as the picture shows, don't tell
Mitch Hall and the Pipers that.Â
Hall scored on a power play in the second extra session to give the Pipers an extra point over the Oles.
Mitch McPherson and
Bailey Martin also found the back of the net for HU, now 2-14-2 overall and 2-7-1 in MIAC play.Â
It was quite a battle all night in the Oles' new rink in Northfield. McPherson finished off as three way play with
Taylor Trapp and Martin to spot HU to a first period lead. The Oles tied the game on a power play only to see Martin give HU a lead with a PP effort of his own at 10:37 of the second period.
St. Olaf evened matters in the third and the game lurched into overtime.Â
Neither team scored in a 5-on-5 session. That led to a 3-on-3 five minute OT. During that period, St. Olaf's Paul Stehr was whistled for tripping. This gave Hamline a rare 4-on-3 power play and Hall, with help from Trapp and
Jake Cass, took advantage to give the Pipers the extra point. With eight points,. Hamline is just two behind Gustavus Adolphus for fifth place -- the final playoff spot.Â
Almost overlooked in all of this was goalie
Evan Robert, who batted away 28 shots in goal -- 21 in the first two periods.Â
The Pipers play their last non-conference game of the season Wednesday, January 23 at Wis-River Falls. HU returns to MIASC play against Bethel in Fridley on Friday, January 25 in Blaine.
