Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey | | Mary-Clare Couillard

Strong first period propels Pipers to 3-3 tie with SJU

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - For the second game in a row, the Hamline men's hockey team (2-8-3, 1-4-2 MIAC) tied a MIAC opponent 3-3, this time tying Saint John's (2-3-4, 1-1-3 MIAC) in St. Cloud. This was the first time that the teams have tied since 2013.

The Johnnies did score in the 3-on-3 overtime period, earning themselves an extra point in the MIAC standings as a result.

Senior goalie Sam Nelson had an impressive day in net, saving a career-high 48 shots in the game. This is the second time this season that he has made 40 or more stops in a game. Nelson is now 2-4-3 on the year.

The Pipers had a strong first period, scoring three times in the first 20 minutes to lead 3-1 heading into the first break.

Scoring first in the game was sophomore Weiland Parrish at 11:03, being assisted by Tyler Nyman and Jackson Bond. This was Parrish's fourth goal this season, being second on the team in total points with 11.

Saint John's retaliated fast, however, scoring within the same minute to tie it at one apiece.

First year Bond regained the lead for HU, scoring a goal of his own at 15:14. Brandon Bissett and Jake Cass tallied assists on the play. With the two-point performance, Bond pushed his league-leading point total to 16.

Junior Riley Meyer was the final Piper to score in the period, taking a pass from Jeron Hirschfield and beating the goalie to stretch Hamline's lead to two.

The Johnnies were able to erase this lead with two goals in the second period to make it 3-3. In the third, the Pipers killed off a penalty early, with Nelson making six saves within the span of two minutes to keep the game tied. It would remain tied for the rest of the period, sending the game into overtime.

Saint John's fired one shot on goal in the first overtime frame, which was stopped by Nelson, eventually sending it into a second overtime, which is played 3-on-3. Only 15 seconds in, SJU's Travis Brown scored off a faceoff to secure the extra point for the Johnnies.

The Pipers will not play again until the new year, hosting St. Olaf for a non-conference game on January 4 at 7:00 p.m.
