ST. PETER, Minn. - The Hamline men's basketball team (1-4, 0-3 MIAC) erased a 10-point deficit with 5:20 left in the second half, but came up short in overtime, falling to Gustavus Adolphus (2-3, 2-0 MIAC) 88-81 in St. Peter.
Â
Junior
Michael Dillon had a big performance for the Pipers, compiling his third double-double of the season with 17 points and 15 rebounds. The Colorado native tacked on two steals and an assist throughout the contest while going a perfect 7-7 from the charity stripe.
Â
Sophomore forward
Cooper Berg also had an impressive day for HU, scoring a career-high 19 points on 5-10 shooting, including draining four threes. Senior
Lucas Berg and sophomore
Addison Ostendorf chipped in for Hamline as well, with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Â
The Pipers struggled to get their shots to fall on the night, shooting 37.2% overall and 25.0% from three. The Gusties had more success connecting on 47.1% of their shots, shooting 38.1% from behind the arc.
Â
Despite the cold shooting, Hamline found a way to stay in the game, which had 13 lead changes throughout. Gustavus held a slight lead for the majority of the first half, leading by seven with only a minute left of the frame. A layup from
Trey Prince would cut that lead to five heading into halftime, 43-38.
Â
The second half went back-and-forth at first, but the Gusties managed to build up a double-digit lead with only five minutes left to play. The Pipers rallied, though, ending the half on a 15-5 run to tie the game at 71 and send it into overtime.
Â
In overtime the game was tied at 75 apiece before Gustavus went on a seven-point run to take over the lead. HU could not recover from this, going on to lose 88-81.
Â
The Pipers return home for their next contest, hosting Saint John's on Saturday, December 7 for a 1:00 p.m. game. The women's team will play approximately 30 minutes after the men's game wraps up, facing Saint Benedict.
