ST. PAUL, Minn. - The long partnership between Hamline and Augsburg's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Special Olympics Minnesota continues this Sunday, as all sides are set to compete in the annual SOMN Unified Basketball Game.Â
Beginning in 2005, the football rivals of Augsburg and Hamline have played for "The Hammer," a trophy awarded to the victor of their annual matchup. Since 2016, the schools have incorporated another rivalry between the schools, which includes a partnership with SOMN and multiple competitions each year, including unified football, unified basketball, and more.
The two teams will be comprised of both Hamline and Augsburg students together with SOMN athletes to share the court and display the values of sportsmanship, inclusion, and fun through the game of basketball.
The relationship with SOMN has been strong throughout the MIAC, with Gustavus Adolphus and St. John's University joining Hamline in the completion of last year's 50 for 50th Special Olympics Challenge. In addition, multiple schools in the conference host their own SOMN events, volunteer at outside SOMN events, and help promote the values that Special Olympics upholds.
Hosted in Augsburg's Si Melby Hall Gymnasium, the game will begin at 5:00pm and is open to all students, families, and fans of the game.
