Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey | | Mary-Clare Couillard

HU ties Bethel in series finale

BLAINE, Minn. - The Hamline men's hockey team (2-8-2, 1-4-1 MIAC) tied Bethel (3-6-2, 2-2-2 MIAC) 3-3 in the series finale on Saturday night in Blaine. After the first overtime session was over, Bethel ended up scoring in the 3-on-3 overtime, claiming an extra point in the MIAC standings.

The scoring went back-and-forth in the game, with the Royals striking and the Pipers always finding a way to answer.

Offensively, HU was led by sophomore Weiland Parrish, who recorded two points on the night, scoring the game-tying goal with only 30 seconds left, as well as assisting an earlier score.

Similar to last night's game, the scoring got started early in the first period. This time, however, it was Bethel that was first on the board, scoring two minutes into the contest.

It did not take Hamline long to answer, with first year Sam Dabrowski netting his second goal of the season at 5:37. He was assisted by Parrish and goalie Sam Nelson on the play. The Royals would take a 2-1 lead heading into the first break, though, as they took advantage of a power play, scoring ten minutes in.

It took the Pipers until the third period to answer Bethel's second goal, as first year Jackson Bond scored less than three minutes into the final frame to make it 2-2. Tyler Nyman and Jake Cass set up the scoring play, helping Bond tie the game. With the goal, Bond pushes his league-leading total points to 14.

Bethel reclaimed the lead six minutes later, scoring at 9:03 to make it 3-2 in their favor. They would keep their one-goal lead until the final 30 seconds when HU pulled their goalie and Parrish took a pass from Kyle Wendorf and found the back of the net to force an overtime period.

Neither team scored in overtime, which sent the game into a second overtime, but this time it was 3-on-3. The Royals scored on a power play in the second overtime frame, which gives them an extra conference point.

Nelson made 20 saves on the night, including 10 in an active second period. The senior is now 2-4-2 on the season.

HU will compete again once more in 2019, taking on Saint John's on Tuesday in St. Cloud before taking an extended break. The team will then be back home on January 4 for a non-conference game with St. Olaf. Both games have a 7:00 p.m. start.
