MENOMINEE, Wis. - The Hamline men's hockey team (3-10-3) put together a strong offensive effort on Saturday night, defeating UW-Stout (4-9-1) 4-2. The four goals was the most that the Pipers have scored since their 4-1 win over St. Olaf on November 22.
Sophomore
Brandon Bissett led the Pipers offensively, scoring the game's first two goals. Junior
Zak Lambrecht and sophomore
Brendan Sheehan also had multi-point games, each tallying two assists.
Hamline wasted no time in getting on the board, capitalizing on an early Blue Devil penalty. Bissett took a pass from Lambrecht and found the back of the net to put the Pipers up 1-0 less than three minutes into the game.
Bissett would add his second goal halfway through the second period, finishing off a passing play from first year
Jackson Bond and Sheehan. This allowed HU to take a two-goal lead into the third period.
Junior
Kyle Wendorf tacked on to the Pipers' lead, scoring a little more than two minutes into the final frame. He was assisted by Lambrecht and first year
Sam Dabrowski on the play.
The Blue Devils got a goal of their own two minutes after Wendorf's scoring on a power play at 4:14 to make it 3-1. UW-Stout kept that momentum going as they added another goal with four minutes left in the game making it 3-2.
Stout pulled their goalie at 18:32 and within 13 seconds Bond put one in the empty net to give Hamline some breathing room at 4-2 with a little more than a minute left in the game. First year
Ryan Murray and Sheehan picked up assists on the scoring play.
The Pipers' defense held tough in the final minutes, not allowing the Blue Devils to score again, making the final 4-2.
In net, junior
Evan Robert recorded a season-high 40 saves to record the win. He is now 1-4 on the year.
Hamline will have one more competition before returning to MIAC play, as they welcome the U.S. National Under-18 Team to TRIA Rink for an exhibition game on Thursday, January 16 at 7:00 p.m. The Pipers will then take on Saint John's the following day to continue with their conference schedule.
