Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey | | Mary-Clare Couillard

Pipers tie Johnnies, but win shootout for extra MIAC point

ST. PAUL, Minn. - For the second time this season, the Hamline men's hockey team (3-10-4, 1-4-3 MIAC) tied Saint John's (4-6-5, 1-1-4 MIAC), this time winning the shootout to earn an extra point in the MIAC standings. After the game was tied 1-1 after the second overtime, sophomore Bailey Martin scored in the shootout and senior Sam Nelson made two saves to secure the extra point.

The Johnnies started the game applying a lot of pressure on the Hamline end, taking eight shots on net before Hamline took one. The Pipers came alive towards the end of the period, however, taking nine shots on goal in the second half of the period. Both teams took a penalty in the period, but neither team was able to convert on their power play, leaving the game tied at 0-0 at the first break.

In the second period, HU was unable to capitalize on the seven penalty minutes taken by Saint John's, but they were able to burn off four of their penalty minutes to keep it tied up at zero going into the final frame.

In the third, the Johnnies used an early power play to score as first year Jack Johnson was able to tip in a goal right in front of the net less than a minute into the period.

The Pipers answered four minutes later, as sophomore Jeron Hirschfeld finished serving a penalty and snuck behind the defense taking a pass from teammate Weiland Parrish. He beat the goalie on the breakaway to tie it at one apiece. Sophomore John Sullivan also tallied an assist on the play. The goal was Hirschfeld's second of the season.

Neither team was able to score again in regulation, sending the game to OT. HU got off two shots on goal in the five-minute overtime, but both were saved by Johnnie goalie Mac Berglove. In the second overtime, that is played 3-on-3, the Pipers had to kill off a penalty before getting a good chance of their own towards the end of the period, but the game remained tied.

This setup the shootout where Nelson made two saves and Martin scored to give the Pipers an extra point.

Nelson finished with 30 saves in the game and moves to 2-5-4 on the year.

Hamline will have a home series next weekend, hosting Concordia Moorhead for a pair of MIAC contests. The teams will open the series on Friday, January 24 with a 7:00 p.m. game and they will play again on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Both games will be played at TRIA Rink.
