HU falls in overtime to #5 St. Thomas

St. Paul, Minn. - The Hamline men's basketball team (2-9, 0-6 MIAC) battled with No. 5 St. Thomas (10-1, 6-0 MIAC), but fell in overtime, 92-83, on Monday night in front of an energized crowd at Hutton Arena.

The Pipers had four players finish in double digits in the contest, with junior Michael Dillon leading the team with a career-high 25 points. The Colorado native also led the team in rebounding, nabbing 11 boards for his fifth double-double this season.

Connor Krenos also tallied a new career-high with 21 points on the night, hitting six threes.  Junior Trey Prince chipped in with 15 points, while sophomore Addison Ostendorf was not far behind with an efficient 11 points of his own, making five of seven from the field (71.4%)

Senior Lucas Berg also did a little bit of everything for the Pipers, securing nine boards, dishing out six assists, and scoring five points.

The Tommies scored first in the game off a free throw, but that would be their only point for the first four minutes as the Pipers were able to secure an 8-1 lead with 16 minutes left in the half. HU continued to hold the lead for the majority of the first 20 minutes, but St. Thomas ended the half on a 6-1 run to take a 33-30 lead into the break.

The second half was extremely close, with neither team leading by more than six throughout the 20 minutes. Krenos hit a three to give the Pipers a one point lead with 1:14 to go, but a successful free throw by St. Thomas tied the game at 79 apiece with 26 seconds left. HU was not able to score after getting the rebound from the missed second free throw, giving UST the ball back with 14 seconds left. However, neither of St. Thomas' shots fell, sending the game into overtime.

The Pipers shot incredibly well in the second half of play, hitting 78.3% (18-23) of their shots and a red-hot 87.5% (7-8) from three. Dillon led the second half efforts, knocking down seven of his eight shots, including all four of his three-point attempts.

Hamline scored first in overtime, with Berg making a jumper in the paint, but from there, the Tommies went on an 11-2 run, allowing them to go on to win 92-83.

St. Thomas was led by sophomore guard Anders Nelson, who had a breakout game with 42 points. He hit 12 of his 18 shots (66.6%), including seven of 12 (58.3%) from beyond the arc.

The Pipers will continue with their current homestand on Wednesday, taking on Carleton at 7:00 p.m.
