ST. PAUL, Minn. – After falling in the series opener, the Hamline men's hockey team (4-13-4, 2-8-3 MIAC) bounced back on Saturday night taking down Gustavus (9-7-3, 5-3-2 MIAC) 2-1 at TRIA Rink. The Pipers trailed 1-0 heading into the third, but rallied for two goals in the final frame to earn the comeback win.
Junior forward
Kyle Wendorf had both goals for HU, getting his third and fourth goals of the season in the game.
First year
Kevin Lake earned the win in net, making a career-high 31 saves in the process.
The Gusties scored early in the first period, getting on the board in the first six minutes.
In the second, neither team was able to score, with Lake making 14 saves throughout the period to keep the game within one heading into the final twenty minutes.
Wendorf scored 34 seconds into the third period to give Hamline some momentum, being assisted by first year
Jackson Bond and sophomore
Jeron Hirschfeld.
Seven minutes later, Wendorf took advantage of a power play, finishing off a passing sequence from first year
Tyler Nyman and Hirshfeld.
The Piper defense held strong for the remainder of the game, as they blocked three shots and Lake saved the other two. The Gusties were granted a power play in the last 30 seconds, but HU was able to burn down the clock to earn the win.
Hamline will be back in action next weekend, as they host Saint Mary's on February 7 at 7:00 p.m. They will then travel to Winona for the series finale on February 8.
