Gusties Get Past Pipers 3-1

SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University women's soccer team's final home bout of 2021 pitted them against Gustavus Adolphus College on Wednesday afternoon. Katie Ashpole's big day that included one goal and two assists propelled the Gusties past Hamline 3-1.

The Pipers fall to 7-7-1, 3-6-1 MIAC while Gustavus Adolphus improves to 9-8, 6-4 MIAC.

Both teams traded goals within the opening 11 minutes. Page Cocchiarella did the honors with a tally in the sixth minute that gave the Gusties a 1-0 lead. The Pipers responded in the 11th minute when Maya Dempsey dumped the ball from 30 yards out that bounced off Gustavus goalkeeper Leah Pavlish and onto Cailey Schmitt, who put home a shot that tied the game 1-1.

That ended up being only one of four Hamline shots in the game as Gustavus tallied two unanswered goals in the second half en route to a 3-1 win courtesy of Kirstin Poppen in the 60th minute, and Ashpole in the 70th minute.

The Gusties outshot Hamline 28-4. Pipers goalkeeper Lauren Sicora made 11 saves over 90:00 of work in net, while Leah Pavlish notched two saves in a complete-game goalkeeping effort for Gustavus Adolphus.

The Pipers will conclude their 2021 regular season at Concordia Moorhead on Saturday, October 30 at 3:30 p.m.
