SAINT PAUL, MINN.—History was made in the Hamline University football team's game at Macalester on Saturday, as it marked the first MIAC contest to feature a black head coach on each side in Chip Taylor, and Macalester's KiJuan Ware. The Pipers offense struggled to approach the red zone throughout the first half, when Macalester took the lead and never gave it up in a 23-13 score to obtain "The Bucket."
The Scots improve to 2-6, 1-3 MIAC while Hamline falls to 3-5, 1-5 MIAC.
Macaletser 23, Hamline 13
The Hamline offense failed to get past the Macalester 41-yard line throughout the opening half. The game's first drive resulted in three points, courtesy of Macalester as Jon Neve nailed a 27-yard field goal to make the score 3-0 at the 9:31 mark, where things stayed after the first quarter. The Scots continued to open quarters strong as their first full drive of the second ended with quarterback Michael Nadeau's three-yard touchdown run, followed by a blocked extra point that stretched Macalester's edge to 9-0 with 9:57 left.
Macalester's first drive of the third also resulted in a score as Ty Bruckner's 29-yard touchdown catch from Nadeau with 12:47 on the clock made the score 16-0. The Pipers found the scoreboard on their ensuing drive as Ryder Hutton concluded an 11-play series with a 30-yard touchdown toss from Connor Leavens, followed by a failed extra point that narrowed their deficit at 16-6 with 6:44 remaining in the third.
Logan Rampel concluded Macalester's next drive with a 16-yard run, followed by a 17-yard score that widened their lead to 23-6 with 2:28 remaining in the third. Triston Thomas closed the game's scoring with a 36-yard rushing touchdown with 13:24 left in the fourth that narrowed Hamline's deficit to 23-13, where things stayed final.
Pipers quarterback Connor Leavens went 19-for-36 passing for 178 yards and one touchdown. Ryder Hutton led the receiving corps with five catches for 58 yards and one touchdown for Hamline, while Triston Thomas tallied six catches for 40 yards. Thomas also accumulated 40 yards on the ground with three carries, which included a touchdown. Defensive back Adrian Cracolici notched 11 tackles along with two break-ups for the Pipers.
Hamline will host Concordia Moorhead on Saturday, November 6 at 1:00 p.m.
