Pipers Storm Past St. Catherine 3-1

SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University volleyball team hosted cross-town rival St. Catherine University at Hutton Arena on Saturday night. The Pipers completed the weekend sweep with a 3-1 victory (25-16, 25-19, 23-25, 25-20) over the Wildcats.

The Pipers improve to 14-5, 5-1 MIAC while St. Catherine falls to 9-10, 2-3 MIAC.

Both teams combined for just 16 kills in the opening frame, but the Pipers prevailed with a 25-16 victory. With the score tied 11-11 in the second set, the Pipers went on a 5-1 run that gave them a lead they wouldn't surrender at 16-12. Sydney Larson, who paced Hamline with 15 kills in the match, registered five in the second frame to propel her team to a 25-19 victory.

The Pipers held a 22-21 lead in set three before St. Catherine closed the frame with a 4-1 run that iced them a 25-23 win. Megan Rubbelke, Rachel Rettmann, and Sydney Larson each notched a kill in Hamline's 4-0 run to end set four en route to a 25-20 victory, and 3-1 match win.

Larson came through with a big day for Hamline with 15 kills, 24 digs, and three service aces. Rachel Rettmann and Julianna Boyum each contributed offensively with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Megan Rubbelke set them up with 40 assists, which helped Hamline eclipse a .219 hitting percentage. Jenna Rubbelke tallied 18 digs for Hamline.

The Pipers will face UW-River Falls in a road match on Wednesday, October 13 at 7:00 p.m.
