NORTHFIELD, MINN.—The Hamline University men's hockey team closed the 2021 portion of their schedule with a New Years Eve bout at St. Olaf College on Friday evening. The Pipers dug themselves out of a 3-1 first-period deficit, as they returned the favor with a 3-1 edge over the final two periods en route to a 4-4 tie against the Oles.
The Pipers exit Friday with a 2-8-1 record, while St. Olaf walks away with a 4-7-3 mark.
Hamline 4, St. Olaf 4
Hamline out shot St. Olaf 15-6 in the opening period, but it was the latter who turned three of those into goals. Luke Suter did the honors with an unassisted tally at 3:25 of the frame to give St. Olaf a 1-0 lead, before Bailey Sommers tied things up at 1-1 for the Pipers with his third goal of the year off an assist from Ryan Murray at 11:06 of the first. The Oles stretched their lead to 3-1 into the first intermission behind scores from Tyler Cooper at 11:23, and Eric Brown at 13:07 of the first.
The Pipers outscored St. Olaf 3-1 over the final two periods, as Joe Collins kicked things off at 15:09 of the second to narrow the score to 3-2. Jonathan Young's power-play tally for the Oles at 18:30 of the second stretched their lead to 4-2, before Hamline's two unanswered third-period goals courtesy of Scott Moyer at 13:58, and Collins' second of the contest at 16:41 knotted things at 4-4.
Hamline out shot St. Olaf 37-30, and each team committed four penalties.
Maximillian Haselbacher made 26 saves in net for Hamline, while St. Olaf goalie Cooper Lukenda stopped 33 shots.
The Pipers will host UW-Stout at TRIA Rink on Saturday, January 8 at 7 p.m.
