Pipers edged by Johnnies 3-2 in home finale

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Hamline men's hockey team (1-4, 1-2 MIAC) played one final home game on Friday night, falling just short against Saint John's (6-2-2, 5-0-1 MIAC) 3-2 at TRIA Rink.

Seniors Austin Wisely, Kyle Wendorf, and Zak Lambrecht all had a TRIA sendoff to remember, as Wisely and Wendorf each scored and Lambrecht assisted both goals. Junior Jeron Hirschfeld also had an assist for HU.

Sophomore Kevin Lake put together a solid performance in net for the Pipers, tallying 33 saves. This was the third time this year that he has recorded 30 or more saves.

The first period was scoreless, with play going back-and-forth for the majority of the frame. Saint John's had 11 shots in the period, and Hamline wasn't too far behind with 10.

The second period was action-packed with four goals scored throughout the 20 minutes. HU was the first to get on the board, with Wisely finishing off a pass from Lambrecht less than five minutes into the period. The Johnnies tied it up about three minutes later, as Jack Johnson intercepted a pass from the Pipers and found Auggie Moore who got it past Lake.

Hamline retaliated, converting on a power play to take over a 2-1 lead less than 30 seconds later. This time it was Wendorf who scored, getting a tip in after a shot from Hirschfeld. With five minutes left in the period, the Johnnies tied it up again, scoring on their own power play to make it 2-2 heading into the final period.

Early in the third period, Saint John's scored what would be the game-winner, shooting a slapshot off of a faceoff that would find its way through traffic to put the Johnnies ahead 3-2. The Pipers had a late power play opportunity, but SJU was able to kill the penalty and preserve their lead.

The Pipers will finish off their 2021 season tomorrow night, heading down to Northfield to take on St. Olaf for a 7:00 p.m. game. Live video and stat links are available on the schedule page.
