ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Hamline women's tennis team (1-10, 0-7 MIAC) battled with non-conference opponent Northwestern (13-5) this afternoon, falling just short of earning the win, as the Eagles claimed the match 5-4. The Pipers won two matches in doubles and two in singles, with three of their singles losses coming in third set tiebreakers.

Janie Schwartz teamed up in the No. 2 doubles spot, coming away with an 8-6 victory in their first time playing together this season. First years
Jersi McAlpine and
Elise Bierbaum also made their debut as a doubles team today, winning in the No. 3 spot, 8-4. Northwestern was victorious at No. 1 doubles, defeating first years
Taylor Vyskocil and
Lily Vang 8-4.

Vyskocil earned a win in the No. 1 singles slot, taking down her UNW opponent 6-4, 6-4. McAlpine had the other singles win, playing at No. 5, as she found a way to bounce back from a first set loss to secure the match win with a score of 2-6, 6-2, 10-6.

At No. 2 singles, Vang put up a good fight, but fell 6-4, 4-6, 7-10. Hopkins, in the No. 3 spot, also took her match to three sets, eventually dropping the match 5-7, 6-2, 3-10. First year
Peyton Buerman was the final Piper to fall in three sets, winning the first set 6-4, before conceding the next two 3-6, 6-10.

Schwartz played at No. 4 for the Pipers in the match, falling 6-2, 6-2 to round out the group.

The Pipers have two more matches scheduled for the 2021 season, taking on Saint Benedict on Friday, April 30 and Macalester on Saturday, May 1.
