SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University volleyball team embarked on a pair of Saturday matches at the Macalester Tournament when they squared off against Coe College and Bethany Lutheran College. The Pipers picked up their first victories of the 2021 season with a 3-1 decision over Coe in the morning match, and a 3-0 sweep over Bethany Lutheran in the afternoon.
The sweep gives Hamline a 2-1 record.
Hamline 3, Coe 1 (17-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-18)
Megan Rubbelke turned in a monster day for the Pipers with five service aces along with 44 assists. She ran a Hamline offense that hit the ball on the screws, hitting above .250 in each of the final three sets. Rachel Rettmann benefitted from it with 16 kills and a .696 hitting percentage, while Sydney Larson notched 15 kills on a .214 hitting mark. Larson also contributed defensively with 11 digs. Julianna Boyum rounded out the Pipers in double-digit kills with 11, along with a game-high six blocks.
Coe was led by Grace Lueken's 15 kills, and defensively by Majda Suljic's game-high 21 digs.
Hamline 3, Bethany Lutheran 0 (25-8, 25-17, 25-17)
Hamline's dominating 25-8 victory in set one included 11 kills, a .385 hitting percentage, and 12 combined errors from Bethany Lutheran. The Pipers went on to hit .244, and .316 in sets two and three respectively en route to a 3-0 sweep.
Hendrickson finished the contest with a team-leading 11 kills. Jenna Rubbelke paced the defense with 15 digs, while Megan Rubbelke wasn't far behind with 13 digs and 34 assists. Bethany Lutheran was led by Alexis Moreching's 10 kills.
The Pipers will hit the road to North Central (Minn.) on Tuesday, September 7 for a 7:00 p.m. match.
