St. John’s Uses Big Second Half to Down Pipers

SAINT PAUL, MINN- The Hamline University men's basketball team took on St. John's in a MIAC battle at Hutton Arena Saturday afternoon. The Johnnies were able to come away with the 75-46 win in this matchup.

The result moves the Pipers to 5-3 (3-2 MIAC), while St. John's will improve to 7-2 (5-1 MIAC) with the win.

This matchup between two of the top teams in the MIAC started as a back and forth affair with after nine minutes the teams were all tied 16. The Johnnies were able to stretch a lead out to ten points when the Pipers turned up their defense, and with the help of nine forced turnovers were able to cut the lead back to 33-30 before the half with a Sam Hoffman three-pointer. St. John's came out on fire in the second half, as they outscored the Pipers 42-16 to pull out the win.

The Pipers were led by Austin Holt who scored 18 points and added a great defensive effort with four steals and two blocks.

For the Johnnies Ryan Thiessen led the way with 20 points, while Kooper Vaughn helped with 16 points.

The Pipers will be in action again when they travel to take on UW-River Falls next Saturday, December 17 at 5 p.m.
