NORTHFIELD, MINN.—The Hamline University men's basketball team made the one-hour trek to Carleton for a Tuesday-night affair. The Pipers held a 78-76 lead and had possession with 3.1 seconds left in the second half. A muffed inbounds pass gave Carleton the ball back with 1.7 on the clock, when Chuck Sweat set up Matt Wyffels' three-pointer at the buzzer that gave Hamline a heartbreaking 79-78 loss.
The Pipers fall to 5-2, 3-2 MIAC, while the Knights improve to 6-1, 3-1 MIAC.
Carleton 79, Hamline 78
Hamline held the lead, or tied the opposition for all but 3:03 of action. The Pipers held a four-point 78-74 cushion with 0:06 on the clock thanks to a pair of free throws from Bradley Cimperman. Luke Harris responded with a pair of free throws to cut his team's deficit to 78-76 before he committed a lane violation on his third try, which gave Hamline the ball back with 0:03 left.
The Knights capitalized on a muffed inbounds pass from the Pipers, which set up Wyffel's game-winner that propelled them to a 79-78 victory.
Daniel McCarrell registered a game-high 28 points on a 5-of-10 clip from beyond the arch, and an 11-of-20 mark from the floor. He engineered a Hamline offense that shot a season-high 29-of-56 (.518) from the field. Cimperman added 24 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Mick Wherley notched 13 points, while Austin Holt converted his fifth double double of the season with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
All of Hamline's scoring came from their starting five.
Jeremy Beckler paced Carleton with 27 points.
The Pipers will host Saint John's at Hutton Arena on Saturday, December 10 at 1 p.m.
