SAINT PAUL, MINN.-The Hamline University women's lacrosse team hosted Cornell (Iowa) in a Saturday-morning MWLC bout at Klas Field. The Pipers grabbed their first lead of the game in the fourth quarter, where they outscored the Rams 4-0 en route to a 10-8 victory.
The Pipers improve to 4-6, 3-0 MWLC, while Cornell falls to 6-8, 1-3 MWLC. SJ Welch, Molly Garin, Tara DeLeo, and Maria Lewis were honored following the game as apart of the senior day festivities.
Hamline 10, Cornell 8
Despite never leading over the opening three quarters, Hamline managed to tie the contest on four occasions. The Pipers, who entered the fourth frame with an 8-6 deficit, managed to tie the game 8-8 in the fourth quarter behind goals from Maria Lewis at 9:33, and Molly Garin at 7:11. This provoked Cornell to call a timeout, which didn't pay dividends as Lewis gave Hamline their first lead of the game at 9-8 with 4:47 left. Taryn Leonard iced the contest with 0:36 left to play to secure a 10-8 victory for the Pipers.
Lewis paced the Pipers offense with five points that included three goals and two assists. Leonard was all over the scoresheet for Hamline with two goals, two assists, five ground balls, and three caused turnovers. Garin registered a team-leading four goals for the Pipers, along with four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
Cornell outshot Hamline 26-20. Justine Case posted a season-best 12 saves in net for the Pipers, while Maddie Althoff stopped six shots between the pipes for the Rams.
The Pipers will travel to Lake Forest on Friday, April 29 for a 5 p.m. game.
