LA CROSSE, WIS.—The Hamline University men's soccer team traveled to La Crosse, Wisconsin to face NAIA Viterbo University on Wednesday afternoon. The V-Hawks prevailed with a 2-1 victory behind Alfie Gyurkovits's game-winning goal in the 88th minute.
The Pipers fall to 2-5, while the V-Hawks stay undefeated at 9-0.
Viterbo 2, Hamline 1
The opening 45:00 of the match was evenly fought, as Viterbo held a slim 7-5 advantage in shots at the intermission. It resulted in a 1-0 Hamline lead in the 32nd minute behind leading scorer Logan Weller's fifth goal of the season.
The final 45:00 was all Viterbo, who mustered a 13-2 edge in shots over Hamline. The V-Hawks' stellar second half included a goal from Jacob Battista in the 65th minute that knotted things at 1-1. Battista was later awarded a penalty kick in the 88th minute, which was saved by Ethan Schauer. However, Alfie Gyurkovits buried a goal :11 later off a feed from Battista, which propelled the V-Hawks to a 2-1 victory.
Viterbo, who were victims of 2-of-3 yellow cards assessed, outshot Hamline 20-7. Pipers goalkeeper Luke Rimington made two saves in net over the first 45:00, while Schauer came in for the final 45:00 and made six saves. Viterbo goalkeeper Ernesto Ascenzo made two saves in the complete-game win.
Hamline will host Bethel at Pat Paterson Field on Saturday, September 24 at 3:30 p.m.
