SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University men's hockey team converted their third-straight overtime victory over a WIAC opponent, as Ryan Brandt's game-winner at 1:05 of overtime secured a 2-1 OT decision over UW-Superior at Tria Rink on Saturday evening. The Pipers finish their non-conference schedule with a 5-1 mark against WIAC schools, and push their win streak to five games.
The Pipers improve to 8-6-1, while the Yellowjackets fall to 10-6-1.
Hamline 2, UW-Superior 1 (OT)
Both regulation goals occurred in the opening frame. Andrew Erwin set the tone at 10:18 of the first period, when he took a centering pass from Dallas Duckson and converted a top-shelf goal that gave Hamline a 1-0 lead. That advantage was short-lived, as C.J. Walker answered the bell for UW-Superior with a goal at 13:35 that knotted things at 1-1 off assists from Tristan Therrien and Sam Sterne.
The Yellowjackets dominated the second period with a 17-4 advantage in shots, but the Pipers held them to just one shot on goal in the third frame to keep the score at 1-1 through regulation.
Ryan Brandt recovered a Yellowjacket turnover, and went coast-to-coast down the right side and fired a wrist shot from 10 feet out that beat goalie Myles Hektor at 1:05 of overtime, which gave Hamline a 2-1 victory.
UW-Superior out shot Hamline 31-22. Kevin Lake made 30 saves in net for the Pipers, while Hektor stopped 20 shots.
Hamline will travel to Saint John's (Minn.) on Thursday, January 19 for a 7 p.m. game.
