Second-Half Surge Lifts Cobbers

MOORHEAD, MINN.—The Hamline University football team traveled to Concordia (Minn.) for a Saturday-afternoon bout. The Cobbers' 602 yards of total offense powered them to a 58-14 victory over the Pipers.

The Pipers fall to 2-4, 0-4 MIAC, while the Cobbers improve to 3-3, 2-2 MIAC.

Concordia (Minn.) quarterback Cooper Mattern turned in a monster day with a 23-of-29 outing that accumulated in 401 yards and five touchdowns. Despite Mattern's stellar outing, the Pipers managed to keep the score within a touchdown for almost all of the first half. Mattern fired on all cylinders for Concordia in the opening drive, where he completed 7-of-9 passes. The last completion was a two-yard touchdown toss to Dawson Schaffer that gave his team a 7-0 lead with 9:24 left in the first quarter.

Alejandro Villanueva countered that performance on Hamline's first try on offense, where he completed 3-for-4 passes that culminated in a 25-yard touchdown toss to Eric Pfenning-Wendt that knotted the score at 7-7 with 5:28 on the clock.

Concordia regained the lead for good on the game's next drive that ended in Damian Silus' 31-yard field goal that made the score 10-7 with 2:51 left in the first quarter. After Silus missed his next field goal attempt, the Cobbers responded on their next drive with Mattern's 85-yard connection with Schaffer that pushed their advantage to 16-7 with 7:10 left in the second quarter.

Villanueva was dynamite on Hamline's next drive with a 4-for-4 series, which included a seven-yard touchdown toss to Charlie Wilson that narrowed their deficit to 16-14 with 3:06 remaining in the second quarter.

The Pipers couldn't inch closer as the Cobbers responded with 42 unanswered points to close the game, which iced a 58-14 win.

Villanueva went 17-of-33 passing for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Nicholas Vasko paced Hamline on the ground with 78 yards on 11 carries, while Wilson paced the receivers with eight catches for 83 yards and one touchdown.

Noah Hickman highlighted the Hamline defense with eight tackles that included one for a loss of yardage, a forced fumble, and an interception that was returned for seven yards. Dain Larsen and Ethan Mills each had a sack for the Pipers defense. Larsen added a forced fumble to his stat line.

Concordia was led by Colin Conteh's 101 yards rushing on 12 carries, while Owen Miller caught 11 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown.

The Pipers will travel to Bethel on Saturday, October 21 for a 1 p.m. game.
