Pipers Salvage Weekend Split With 5-4 OT Win Over Falcons

MEQUON, WIS.—The Hamline University men's hockey team salvaged a weekend split with Concordia (Wis.) on Saturday afternoon, as freshman defenseman Kyle Mortenson's game-winning goal at 2:05 into overtime propelled the Pipers to a 5-4 (OT) victory.

The Pipers improve to 1-1, while the Falcons fall to 1-1.

Hamline 5, Concordia (Wis.) 4 (OT)

Three lead changes occurred in the contest. The first period belonged to Concordia, who held an 8-5 shots on goal advantage en route to a 2-0 lead courtesy of tallies from Noah Roitman at 4:52, and Mi-Kwan Tallman at 15:11.

Hamline answered the bell with a 12-10 edge in shots on goal in the second period, which resulted in a 3-2 lead behind goals from Carson Simon at 5:06, Bronson Adams at 18:20, and Bailey Sommers at 18:36.

The Pipers had plenty of chances to build on that lead, as the third period afforded them three power play opportunities. Despite those opportunities and a 13-5 shots on goal advantage, the Falcons regained the driver's seat at 4-3 behind scores from Derek Humphreys at 8:23, and Sawyer Wirsing at 10:49.

The game's final five minutes went in Hamline's favor, as they strung together four shots and held Concordia to zero in that span. One of those shots found the back of the net thanks to Brandon McNamara's first goal as a Piper at 17:39 of the third period, which tied the game at 4-4.

Each team mustered just one shot in the 3-on-3 overtime session. Hamline's shot happened to result in a goal at 2:05, when Kyle Mortenson secured a 5-4 win.

AJ Carls had three assists for the Pipers, while Jackson Wille had two. Adams had a two-point night with one goal, and one assist. Hamline out shot Concordia 31-24.

Trevor Wong, who picked up the winning decision in net for the Pipers, recorded 20 saves. Gabe Rosek stopped 24 shots between the pipes for the Falcons.

Hamline will open MIAC play on Friday, November 3 at Saint Mary's (Minn.). Game time is set for 7 p.m.
