OWATONNA, MINN.—The Hamline University women's tennis team squared off against Bethany Lutheran in a neutral-site dual in Owatonna, Minnesota on Friday, where they snapped a three-match losing skid with an 8-1 domination.
The Pipers improve to 3-9, while the Vikings fall to 1-4.
"Great win for the Hamline women's squad today in Owatonna against Bethany Lutheran," said Pipers head tennis coach Spencer Jones. "We set the tone by winning five of the first six singles matches and gutting out several tight second sets, and third-set tiebreaks. We continued our strong doubles play by sweeping all three spots and look forward to a conference battle tomorrow in Winona."
Hamline 8, Bethany Lutheran 1
The doubles flight resulted in a 3-0 sweep for Hamline, led by an 8-1 win by Jenna Rubbelke/Sydney Hubbard at the No. 3 spot. Ashley Pitzen/Lynn Nguyen (8-6) and Chloe Reyes/Natalie Randall (8-7) won nail biters at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots, respectively.
The top five singles matches belonged to Hamline. Rubbelke prevailed at No. 2 6-0, 6-0, while Pitzen was victorious at No. 1 with a 6-0, 6-4 decision. Nguyen was nearly flawless at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-1 score, followed by Natalie Randall's convincing 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4. Reyes came through with a clutch 2-6, 7-6, 1-0 victory at the No. 3 spot.
Hamline will stay on the road for a match at Saint Mary's (Minn.) tomorrow, Saturday, March 25 at 1 p.m.
