SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University women's soccer team welcomed Edgewood to Pat Paterson Field for their 2023 season opener on Friday afternoon. A pair of first-half goals from Maya Dempsey gave the Pipers a 2-1 cushion at intermission. It was a lead Hamline maintained more than halfway through the second half before Edgewood registered two unanswered goals within the final 16 minutes, which included Madi Johnson's score from 30 yards out on a free kick in the 87th minute that sealed her team a 3-2 result.
The Pipers fall to 0-1 on the season, while the Eagles move to 1-0.
Edgewood 3, Hamline 2
Edgewood took a 1-0 lead off their first shot of the game courtesy of Marley Satran in the 10th minute.
Maya Dempsey commanded a Hamline squad that out shot Edgewood 7-3 in the opening frame, which consisted of goals in the 21st and 30th minutes that made the score 2-1. The Pipers held onto that cushion until the 75th minute, when Rylee Brotz's goal knotted the score 2-2. The 87th minute saw Madi Johnson propel the Eagles to a 3-2 lead, as she fired a free kick from 30 yards back that slipped through the goalkeeper's hands.Â
Sydni Thompson assisted on Dempsey's first goal.
Hamline out shot Edgewood 13-12, led by Dempsey's team-leading three shots. Brotz tallied a game-high four shots for the Eagles.
Isabella Jensen made three saves in a complete-game goalkeeping effort for the Pipers, while Hailey Hartel and Hailey Corcoran each tallied two saves for the Eagles.
Hamline will host Buena Vista on Sunday, September 3 at 10 a.m.
