SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University football team squared off against St. Olaf for their annual Homecoming game at Klas Field on Saturday afternoon. The Pipers prevailed in the passing game with a 321-256 advantage thanks to another strong performance from senior wide receiver Charlie Wilson, who hauled in a season-high 14 passes that accumulated in 214 yards and a pair of touchdowns. It wasn't enough, as St. Olaf never trailed in a 49-25 victory over Hamline.
The Pipers fall to 2-2, 0-2 MIAC, while the Oles improve to 3-1, 2-0 MIAC. Both teams hadn't faced each other since October 5, 2019, when St. Olaf defeated the Pipers 29-2 in Northfield.
St. Olaf 49, Hamline 25
Both teams traded a touchdown on their second offensive series, which included Gilbert Guerra III's five-yard run that tied the game at 7-7 with 5:53 left in the first quarter. It was a score that remained until the second quarter, where St. Olaf opened with three-straight touchdowns en route to a 28-7 lead with 2:45 remaining in the half. It was enough cushion for the Oles in a 49-25 victory over the Pipers.
Wilson's 214 yards receiving was just two shy of his season-high of 216 that was achieved at Carleton on September 23, while his 14 catches tied for a career-high that was accomplished in a 43-42 loss at St. Scholastica on October 1, 2022. He added 57 yards on three kickoff returns.
Hamline quarterback Alejandro Villanueva finished 24-of-40 passing for 297 yards and a pair of touchdowns, both caught by Wilson. Guerra III racked up 47 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries, while sophomore kicker Durham Welch nailed a 42-yard field goal that narrowed Hamline's deficit to 28-17 at halftime.
Jevon Jones paced the Pipers defense with nine tackles, which included eight solo.
Oles running back Jordan Embry registered 141 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 27 carries, while his quarterback Theo Doran went 13-of-23 passing for 253 yards and two touchdowns.
The Pipers will host Augsburg at Klas Field on Saturday, October 7 at 1 p.m.
