EAU CLAIRE, WIS.—The Hamline University men's hockey team tied for a season high in goals scored in a 5-1 road victory over UW-Eau Claire on Friday night.
The Pipers improve to 5-8-1, while the Blugolds fall to 9-6-1.
Hamline 5, UW-Eau Claire 1
Despite being outshot 29-18, Hamline managed to light the lamp five times. Hamline found it's scoring flair after a scoreless first period as Derek Becklin, Brandon McNamara, and Bailey Sommers each netted goals within the opening 11:00 of the second period to make the score 3-0. This provoked a UW-Eau Claire timeout thereafter, where they swapped in Keaton French for Max Gutjahr in net.Â
The change in goaltenders provided spark for the Blugolds at 19:43 of the second, when Charlie Erickson narrowed the score to 3-1.
UW-Eau Claire didn't narrow the gap further as Jordon Halverson widened Hamline's lead to 4-1 at 8:26 of the third, followed by Sommers' second power-play tally of the game at 12:28 that made things 5-1.
Sommers engineered a Pipers unit that finished 2-for-3 on the power play, scoring both of those goals. Kyle Mortenson tallied a pair of assists for Hamline while Jacob Hicks, Carson Simon, Nikolai Dulak, and AJ Carls each had one.
Keaton Woodley notched 28 saves in net for the Pipers. Eau Claire goaltenders Gutjahr and French combined for 13 stops.
The Pipers will stay on the road to face UW-Superior tomorrow, Saturday, January 13 at 7 p.m.
