Cardinals Sweep Pipers

WINONA, MINN.--The Hamline University men's hockey team fell to Saint Mary's University (Minn.) 3-1 on Saturday night.

The Pipers fall to 0-4-0, 0-2-0 MIAC, while the Cardinals improve to 3-3-0, 2-0-0 MIAC.

The first period saw Saint Mary's lead 2-1, kick-started by scoring at 10:58 from Gabe Potyk, off a feed from Nathan Solis and Blake Arneson. Hamline equalized things 1-1 with a goal at 13:32 from Dallas Duckson, assisted by Ryan Brandt. However, the Cardinals regained the advantage at 15:32 with a goal from Colin Tushie off a pass from Tyler Lafferty. Both goalies, Jake Turek for Hamline and A.J. Ruskowski for Saint Mary's, made multiple saves throughout the period, reflecting a busy 20 minutes on both ends of the ice.

In the second period, Saint Mary's extended their lead to 3-1, capitalizing on a power-play tally from Cole Mickel off a dish by Joona Juntunen and Colin Tushie at 18:03. The Pipers had multiple opportunities to close the gap, including three power plays, but were unable to convert any into goals, with several of their shots being blocked by the Cardinals defense. The period also saw Saint Mary's winning the majority of faceoffs, maintaining their edge in puck control.

Saint Mary's dominated in faceoffs throughout the third period, winning 11 out of 15 against Hamline. The period also saw four penalties, two for each team, Despite those facts, both teams failed to bury one in a scoreless period that kept the margin at 3-1. Saint Mary's aggressive play was evident with 12 shots on goal, but Hamline's goalie Jake Turek made several key saves. The Pipers managed seven shots, with A.J. Ruskowski stopping them all.

Dallas Duckson made a significant impact with a goal, while Brandon McNamara stood out for Hamline with a faceoff win percentage of 71 percent. Additionally, Pipers goaltender Jake Turek recorded 24 saves in his first collegiate start.

Cole Mickel made an impact with a power-play goal and three blocks, for the Cardinals. Colin Tushie led the team with two points, including a game-winning goal, demonstrating his offensive prowess. Blake Green stood out at the faceoff circle, winning 60% of his draws, while Cooper Smyl led in faceoff percentage with an impressive 75%. Gabe Potyk also contributed significantly, scoring a goal and maintaining a strong 70% faceoff win rate.  A.J. Ruskowski totaled 17 saves in net for the Cardinals.

The Pipers will host Bethel at TRIA Rink on Friday, November 22 at 7 p.m.
