DE PERE, WIS.—The Hamline University men's tennis team opened the spring portion of their 2023-24 season against St. Norbert and Lawrence at the Green Bay Tennis Center on Friday. The Pipers picked up a 5-4 victory over the Green Knights, followed by an 8-1 throbbing of the Redhawks.
In between those matches, the Pipers finished their suspended bout against UW-Stevens Point that initially took place at Washington Tech on September 9, where they led 2-1 after doubles. Fast forward to today, Hamline hung onto a 5-4 victory over the Pointers in Oshkosh.
"The men rolled to two wins today," said Pipers head tennis coach Spencer Jones. "A great way to end the weekend with a full sweep from both teams."
The Pipers move to 4-2 with the wins.
Hamline 5, St. Norbert 4
Hamline found themselves in a 2-1 hole after doubles, where their only win occurred at No. 1 by a score of 8-3 from Isaac Hultberg/Elijah Krause.Â
Hultberg and Krause each registered three-set victories in the singles flight. Hultberg prevailed 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 at No. 2, while Krause won 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 at No. 4. The No. 1 spot resulted in a 7-6, 6-4 win for Rumeal Setts. Surprise Taylor was victorious 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 at No. 5, as was Keegan Terrone 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6.
Hamline 8, Ripon 1
The No. 2 doubles slot saw Tyler Rousslang/Rumeal Setts win 8-5, while No. 3 resulted in an 8-5 victory for Keegan Terrone/Elden Lee.
Setts took No. 1 singles 8-4, followed by an 8-5 win at No. 2 for Hultberg. Rousslang won by an 8-6 score at No. 3. Elijah Krause prevailed at No. 4 singles 8-2, Taylor took care of business at the No. 5 spot 8-3, as did Terrone 8-0 at No. 6.
Hamline 5, UW-Stevens Point 4 (Resumed from September 9)
"Congratulations to Rumeal Setts and Elden Lee on their first collegiate wins, and to Elijah Krause for making a successful comeback from multiple injuries," said Jones.
The Pipers got doubles wins from Hultberg/Krause by a score of 8-5 at the No. 1 spot, and Setts/Lee by an 8-6 margin at No. 2.
No. 2 singles saw Hultberg take care of business 6-1, 7-6, while Krause cruised to a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 4. Terrone won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.Â
Setts dropped a heartbreaking 7-5, 7-5, 14-12 score at No. 1 singles.Â
The Pipers will travel to Macalester on Saturday, February 17 for a 5 p.m. match.
